Exploring a new part of a permission. I’d previously been up on this downland, not actually detecting but looking for some missing clips from horse jumps. The number of non-ferrous signals meant I had to come back one day with a spade 😀 Detector used: XP Deus Full on v.5.21,…
Metal Detecting
An add-on to fieldwalking where instead of scanning the surface of the land with your eyes, you’re scanning it with your ears in search of buried metal artefacts.
NOTE – Please, if possible photograph the location and record the 10 figure OS Grid Reference of your finds.
Any find older than 300 years old should be passed on to your Finds Liaison Officer for recording on the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
Anything that may be classed as Treasure MUST be reported to the Coroner.
Despite COVID-19 and Pandemic Lockdowns I managed to get out metal detecting and find a few things worth looking out for a second time 🙂, so here’s my best finds of 2020… Detectors used: XP Deus Full on v.5.21, 9″ HF coil & 11″ standard coil https://regton.com/ Nokta Makro Simplex+…
I was out on a cold and damp morning around East Pennard in Somerset squelching along the bottom of a slope that old maps show had been a drover’s road, etc. I’d been in fields a couple of miles away a few weeks earlier and found several Roman and early…
The day before the month-long November Lockdown I was out on a dig with Midweek Searchers on a couple of sites in Hampshire near the historic area of Alresford – everything from Neolithic onwards… Detector used: XP Deus Full on v.5.21, 9″ HF coil https://regton.com/ Pinpointer used: XP MI-6 https://regton.com/…
I combined a dig with Paul Howard and the “Let’s Go Digging” team near Gloucester, with a whistle-stop visit to Farmer P at Wotton-Under-Edge to drop off some bits (and get a cup of tea and some pressies 😀) Detector used: XP Deus Full on v.5.21, 9″ HF coil https://regton.com/…
Out with Tom Pisarek & UK History Finders near Glastonbury searching for the mythical Excalibur perhaps 😀 Sadly all I found was a few coins and an awful lot of lead – but the search for the treasure goes on 😂 Detector used: XP Deus Full on v.5.21, 9″ HF…
Out with Fluff the Wonderdog, Shawn Chant and Spire Diggers on one of their permissions in Hampshire. The site had revealed Roman, Medieval silver coins, and Bronze Age artefacts on an earlier dig so literally anything could be found… One problem though, the dig area was absolutely massive but because…
On a blazingly hot day, I joined Spire Diggers for a wander around an area which had history associated with Romans, Normans, Knights Templar (yes, the ones with the big red crosses who went on the Crusades to beat up the Saracens 😀), the Knights of St John, various halls…
Out on my local club meet on some virgin, totally undetected ground 😀 As other digs in the area have been OK for artefacts there was a possibility of decent finds in these fields. Detector used: XP Deus Full on v.5.21 using a 9″ HF Coil https://regton.com/ Pinpointer used: XP…
I was out detecting in a landscape reasonably close to my home, filled with Saxon history, Iron Age dwellings, hill forts, and Roman roads. It was a previously undetected area which was full of promise, and even the early morning drizzle wasn’t going to put me off going. Detector used:…
